The Grande Ronde Valley in Union County, Oregon is a fabulous place to consider for making real estate purchases of multiple kinds. Whether you’re looking to move, buy a second home, or are more interested in purchasing agricultural land, farms, ranches, bare acreage, range land, or properties for development or recreation, the Grande Ronde Valley is a great place to look.
The Grande Ronde Valley, whose name means “great circle” is completely enclosed by mountains (Eastern Oregon’s beautiful Blue Mountains), a unique feature shared by few places in the United States. Part of the Columbia River Plateau, the Grande Ronde Valley floor is about 2,700 feet above sea level, and the valley walls run 35 miles long from Pumpking Ridge to Pyles Canyon, and 15 miles wide from Cove to the Grande Ronde River’s canyon. The Grande Ronde Valley was a waypoint in the 1840s, as pioneers ventured across the west on the Oregon Trail to the Western Oregon coastal regions.
La Grande is the largest city in the valley, with immediate access to I-84 and rail systems. Other communities in the valley include Union, Cove, Island City, Alicel, Imbler, and Summerville.
Well-known recreational and historical locations in the area include:
- Hot Lake Springs Resort, east of La Grande on the way to Union;
- the Elgin Opera House in Elgin, to the north;
- the Eagle Cap Excursion Train;
- Gilstrap Brothers Winery;
- the Eastern Oregon Fire Museum in La Grande;
- Ski Anthony Lakes in the Elkhorn Mountains, a short drive to the southwest;
- the Eagle Cap Wilderness area to the east;
- Hells Canyon National Recreation Area to the southeast;
- many unique museums, parks, and other residential attractions
As mentioned, the valley has many opportunities for real estate investment of one kind or another. Acreage properties can principally be found along the foothills of the valley, where fir and pine trees add just enough “flavor” to the land, and make for attractive parcels. Timberland can be found in the north end of the valley near Imbler and Summerville. Farmland can be found throughout the entire valley.
Heading south out of the valley takes you to the border of the Baker Valley, where we also have many properties listed. North Powder rests just on the border between Union and Baker Counties, and offers great pasture and rangeland.
